Classroom Rules
I have three rules in my classroom. These are also our school rules. I expect my students to:
1. Be responsible
2. Be respectful
3. Be safe
Behavior Management
My classroom behavior plan is called "Glow and Grow". I will not be using a behavior clip chart. I prefer that the students aren't aware of each other's "colors". I would also like to prevent the stress and embarrassment that some students experience when they move their clip down for breaking a rule. We will be working together to have a positive classroom environment by:
1. making good choices that help us do our best learning.
2. being kind and taking care of each other.
3. doing our best to keep trying, even when things get tough
When we make "not so good" choices, there will be logical consequences and shared problem solving. I will send home "Grow" notes when communication and/or family support is necessary to further assist your child in making good choices.O
*Some offenses may result in an immediate office referral to see the Principal or Social Worker.
Communication Log
The communication log will travel between home an d school in your child's "Homework Folder". I will record reminders, upcoming important events, notes to you, etc. Parents are also encouraged to use the log to inform me of any changes in how their child is going home, questions, concerns, etc.
Homework
At first grade, students should receive about 20 minutes of homework each night. If your child is spending more than 20 consecutive minutes on homework every night, please let me know. The purpose of homework is to reinforce what we have already learned in class and for practice of a skill. Students will have reading and math homework every Monday-Thursday.
Reading-- I will send home a small book or poem for your child to read each night (M-Th) at home. Please have someone sit, listen, and watch your child read the story. The book should not be difficult to read. If it is, please attach a note letting me know.
Math—There will usually be a math worksheet to reinforce what we learned in class that day. If there is not a worksheet, please spend that time working on addition/subtraction flash cards.
I know that there are times when the homework doesn’t get finished or even started. Please don’t make this a habit. We need to make sure that we make homework a priority so that your child doesn’t fall behind the rest of his/her peers.
If homework is not completed, the student will be expected to complete it during afternoon recess or the following night.
Make-Up Work
If your child misses school for any reason, he/she is responsible for making up the missed work. When your child is absent, please call the school office (939-3458) in the morning to request your child’s work for the day. Sometimes students feel better as the day progresses and can complete some of the work that night. This will help prevent an overload of homework when your child returns.
Birthdays
You may send in birthday treats to celebrate your child’s birthday. I ask that they be store bought and easy for me to distribute. If your child’s birthday is during the summer, we will celebrate his/her half birthday.
Book Orders
I will send home monthly Scholastic Book Order forms. You will usually have a week and a half to place your order. Orders can be sent back to me with a check written out to Scholastic Book Clubs or you may place your order on-line at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. If you order on-line please use this information: class access code: GZDRR
Dismissal Change
If your child will be going home a different way than normal or someone else will be picking them up than normal, please let me know by note. You can write it on his/her Communication Log or write me a separate note and put it in their Homework Folder. Your child’s safety if my biggest concern at the end of the day. I want to make sure he/she gets home safely.
